OPENING DAY

A WebQuest for 10-12th Grade Sports Marketing

Introduction

You have just been hired as a sports marketing manager for a local marketing firm. Your boss has assigned you to work with a team of other managers to work with a local high school athletic department to develop a marketing campaign for the spring sports teams. During the past couple of years the sports department has been faced with decreased funding and support of the community. Attendence has dwindled and the school spirit has died. There have been rumors that the spring season may be cancelled but the Principal want to save the sports teams. Opening day is soon approaching and it is up to your marketing team to save the schools teams and develop a promotional plan that will bring back the school spirit and bring together the community on opening day.

The Tasks

There are three tasks that will be done by each individual and teams to complete a promotional plan for the following spring sports, Boys Baseball, Girls Softball, Boys Tennis, Girls Tennis and the Track and Field Team.

Self Knowledge Task:

Review resources for the skills and abilities needed to be a successful sports marketing manager.
Analyze the resources to determine the job duties and responsibilities of a sports marketing manager.
Write a one page paper outlining the skills, abilities, and responsibilities you need to be successful.

Design Task:

Sports Marketing Managers team will meet with the coaches and players of their assigned sports team.
Review and analyze resources to complete the task.
Design a promotional brochure for your assigned team.

Creative Task:

Review resources on local sports teams
Analyze resources for promotional ideas.
Create a Power-Point presentation to promote the opening day event of your assigned sport team.

     2.   Review and analyze the websites of sponsors of sports teams and sports players.

    3.    Create a Power Point presentation promoting an Opening Day event for your assigned sports team. Each team will create one presentation that must use at least 7 slides and include a title page with             your assigned sports team and the Sports Management Team members that created it. Include at least 2 photographs, at least 2 different types of slides, transition effects, choose a sponsor for the             team and link to the sponsors website. (Please keep the sponsor school appropriate-No Beer Ads!). Remember to include elements that you learned throughout all of the tasks.

Evaluation

Describe to the learners how their performance will be evaluated. Specify whether there will be a common grade for group work vs. individual grades.

Some information was obtained from the coach and sports team. A few resources from the web resources were used. .	Student's developed at least 9 questions and obtained good information from the coach and sports team members. Only some of the web resources were used. Choose the most appropriate formats for presenting a range of information	Student's did not use a template to design their brochure. There were many formatting mistakes and the pictures and text were hard to read.	Student's used a template for their brochure but the brochure was not formatted correctly. Students will be able to compose an informational brochure about a school sports team.	Student's brochure was missing more than 3 of the required elements. Student's brochure met all the requirements, used a template, had at least one picture, quote from team member and coach and used at least 2 formatting effects. .All the infomation about the team was included.
Students will be able to create a Power-Point presentation that is a promotional advertisement of a sporting event.	Students did not work effectively as a team. The presentation had less than 5 slides and there were more than 3 requirements missing. .	Student's did not work fully as a team and the presentation had 5 slides. Two or more of the requirements were not included in the presentation. .	Student's worked as a team and the presentation was at least six slides and was missing one of the requirements of the slide show. .	Student's worked as a team to create a Power Point presentation that was at least 7 slides. The slide show met or exceeded all requirements.

Conclusion

Congratulations it is Opening Day for the sporting events and the stands are full! Your promotional campaign has saved the school sports teams for this year. Take the weekend off and be ready for your new assignment on Monday.
