When I think of
reflecting the above picture came to mind. Last summer I spent a
month at Crystal Beach, Canada . It was the first summer in years
that I had no job or school responsibilities and I could enjoy the end
of my day in the warm sunshine watching the sunset go into the
horizon. This class has been an enjoyable and learning experience
for me. The telecommunications module began the journey to a new
understanding of the use of computers in the classroom. The
modules proceeded to the tool and the tutor modules where I learned the
definition and the difference between various computer software
packages. This last module which I am completing , the Eportfolio
module has given me directions and insight to the design and use of
webquests in instruction. and the creation of my own electronic
EPortfolio.
I have learned many things about integrating technology in the
classroom. In the telecommunications module I learned that the
definition is the use of media to link people and information
electronically for the purpose of communications. By completing
the website evaluation assignment, I am now aware of how to choose and
integrate websites into the classroom for educational purposes.
In the tools module I was introduced to Inspiration software.
This is something I can use with all types of students and lessons as
an organizer to teach and for the students to use to create graphic
organizers. In the tutor module the software evaluation and the Merlot
website gave me more ideas of useful ways to incorporate
tutorials in my lessonplans. I also created a tutorial video
using Snagit and it is included in my
Web log.
In the EPortfolio module I learned how to create a
Webquest that is a great way to integrate
various technology into as a culminating activity in a unit.
I learned many things in the reading throughout each of the
modules. The Digital Bullying information opened my eyes to an
issue that needs to be addressed in the schools and to the parents of
students of all ages. The article by Todd Oppenheimer was a very
negative and discouraging viewpoint of technology in the
classroom. It made me view what I thought were the postitive
sides of computers used as tool . The "Multimedia and Multiple
Intelligences" article gave me further information about the
intelligences and how the use of technology addresses these
intelligences. In Dodge's article he fully described the purpose
and how to design a Webquest. This information as well as the
other two articles helped me to develop ideas and follow his design
when creating my Webquest.
I have learned many things from my fellow students in the class
discussions. There were suggestions on stand alone software and
tutorials that veteran teachers used in their classrooms. In the
mind tools discussion there were discussions on the various ways other
educators used computers in their classrooms. One of the main
concerns and ideas shared by teachers was the availability of computers
in their current classrooms and school districts. Implementing
technology into the classroom had to include scheduling time in
computer labs or the library. There was also insight from
teachers that were more knowledgeable on computer use and the ideas
shared by many who are inexperienced with computers.
As this has been only my second formal class in computer education, I
have gained a lot of knowledge throughout this course. The
most significant is that I now know the educational value and the use
of computers as a means of communication, tool, tutor and the
value of EPortfolios and WebQuests. I plan on purchasing the
Inspiration and Snagit software and continue using it for my own
education and to implement these into my classroom lessons. I
have just started teaching and I have used things in my lessons
such as evaluating websites and how to use websites to obtain
infomation. I also am going to research other available teaching
software and tutorials that I can use next year to assist in teaching
my students the various subjects in the Medical Billing
curriculum. One of the goals I have is that when I complete my
Masters program in CDIT hopefully next year, is to obtain a job that
will assist other educators implement technology into their curriculum
or to teach online classes myself.
I have never created or used a
Web blog until
this class. I could use it in my discipline as a communication
tool between myself and my students. After creating and
posting the video tutorial I did it could be used in the Business
curriculum. to give short tutorials or lessons on a weekly basis to
students in a computer class. It was the first time that I used a
photo
blog
for educational
purposes. In my photo album I posted pictures of my new class, but I
saw how pictures could be used as an educational tool when viewing a
classmates photo log.
For my first
portfolio artifact I
choose the map I made with the tutorial for Inspiration mindmap
software. I previously saw this tool but never had any
instruction on how to use it. I think the map defines part of
this class as the first thing students should learn are the pieces of
the computer and the definitions of each component. I plan on
using this software again as it has many educational uses for me as a
student and for students of all ages. I am currently teaching
adult learners and I may use this to create graphic organizers for
parts of the course next year.
For my second
portfolio artifact I
choose my Telecommunications lesson on The Super Bowl
Marketplace. Marketing is one of my favorite subjects and was one
of my choices for a Master's program of study. I can see the
importance of using a website in a lesson but giving directions on how
to use them in an educational way. The use of the superbowl
website allows the viewer to watch the superbowl ads again to analyze
the information. While watching the famous 30 second commercials
during the game the value of the marketing effects are hard to
remember.
In my final project I created a
WebQuest that again uses the Sports Marketing
class. I taught this class in my first assignment as a student
teacher. Previously I observed the teacher I worked with and
admired how he incorporated technology and unique lesson ideas in his
classroom. The idea of the brochure came from a similar lesson
that he does with his students. I don't know if he does use
webquests but maybe I will share this one with him. If I
ever get a job teaching marketing I would include this Webquest
for my students. When I find the time I may create some type of
WebQuest for my students in Medical Billing which I will be teaching
again next year.
When I first started this class this semester I was excited to begin
learning more about computer technology and expanding my
educational knowledge on technology. I am also taking
another class and received a job teaching 30 hours per week just before
this class started. I had a little of the computer anxiety that
adult learners get when each module started and I read all of the
requirements. Some days I didn't know if I would have the time
and the skills to accomplish all of the tasks. Through the
guidance of a wonderful teacher and the encouragement in the disussions
with fellow students I have completed some major tasks. I
have used purchased and used new tools such as the web camera and
microphone and have learned how to create a webpage, webquest, webblog,
and photoblog. My technology toolbox is getting fuller and
as this class comes to end it gives me that warm feeling of last
summer and the images of the reflection of the sun on the water.
